Strategies to Turn Assessment into Instruction
The Assessment Summit is a two-day workshop intended to support districts in evaluating their current assessment program, plan new assessment around their goals, and explore opportunities for engaging teachers and students in the process of assessment as learning.
On-site Professional Learning
Two full-day face-to- face professional learning sessions for leaders to learn, discuss, and share around best practice, current practice, needs, and fitting assessment into the instructional program in meaningful ways.
The expected outcome is to develop new ideas around making assessment an instructional tool that more closely aligns with district goals rather than an often ad-hoc addendum to instruction that simply serves as a grade for students.
These ideas and the framework developed around them will be used to engage stakeholders in the district as a refined assessment program is developed.
Professional Learning
Districts will have the opportunity to supplement the Summit with custom developed professional development and consulting – on-site or remote – that will support the development of a new program of assessment, in-depth learning on specific assessment methods, or tactical work on implementing new assessment models.
Summit Expected Outcomes
- Assessment and content-area leaders conduct a robust inventory of the current assessment program to evaluate coherence with current district goals
- District goals are positioned against current research in assessment programming. Models of assessment are evaluated for fit against the district goals
- Models of developing performance assessment, integrating formative assessment practices, and using short-cycle assessment will be shared
- Cross-curricular assessment, stronger connections to state standards, and other elements of well-developed assessment will be reviewed
- A plan and set of recommendations will be developed for further study, action, and discussion with stakeholders
